5 Things to know about choosing your colour palette
Choosing your wedding colours might seem like a no brainer right? Knowing exactly how to choose that just perfect shade of pink or that fabulous mood enhancing shade of hunter green might not be as easy as you think. I am often asked how to choose the right colour palette.
Deciding on a colour palette for your wedding should be something you begin to decide upon quite early in the planning process. Everything from your event space choice, the design aesthetic, to the colour of your bridesmaids dresses, your flowers, your tablescapes, your stationery and signage, decor elements and finishings touches, will all evolve from this all important decision.
Here are Sue Gallo Designs 5 top tips for choosing your colour palette.
TAKE INSPIRATION FROM YOUR SETTING
Just as your wedding vibe or style should be enhanced by your event space, so should your wedding colour palette. While it is a good idea to have an idea of your colours before beginning your venue search, you can use your venue to inspire your colour palette as well. For instance … chosen a cool modern chic industrial space, converted warehouse or loft … venue’s like are practically “blank slates” allowing you to add as much or as little personality with colour as you want. While more formal venues like banquet halls, country clubs and restaurants may have opulent finishings and decorative touches that you can take inspiration from to inspire our palette.
SET THE MOOD
Wedding colours have a huge impact on the vibe of your wedding. Colours put you in the mind set, enhance your wedding style, mood and atmosphere. So it is important that you begin thinking about your colour palette and design aesthetic at the same time. Going Boho glam … then earthy tones such as taupe, beige, burnt oranges and sage greens are to be considered. While ivories, whites, greens and metallic golds lend themselves well to a traditionally classic and luxurious wedding. Soft blushes, dusty blues, pastel yellows and peachy tones spark secret garden inspired dreams.
NO OVERTHINKING OR MATCHY MATCHY HERE!
Keep it simple … there is no pressure to get that just right tone of blush to match both your wedding flowers and your maids gowns. Using your wedding colours as a guide, a direction to cohesively bind your vision together. Not very part of your wedding has to match perfectly. We here at Sue Gallo Designs love using a tonal colour palette. In fact, a tonal colour palette will look more sophisticated and cohesive than a perfectly matched one.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Take those colours you already love and think outside the box. Use home decorating and fashion magazines, take inspiration from design and fashion to curate a colour palette that speaks to your own personal style and tastes. Choose colours that speak to you, inspire you and use all those fabulous colours you love in a new way! Use the colour wheel to choose tones, hues and shades that compliment each other. Pair heavily saturated colour with more neutral tones, then complete the pairing with softer complimentary tones.
LOOK TO WHAT YOU LOVE
Here at Sue Gallo Designs, we always suggest that our couples choose a palette that they are already drawn to. Colours they live with on a daily basis, from their wardrobe, to their home decor to colours they generally gravitate to and to colours that show up most often in their lives. Remember, curate your wedding your own way … long gone are the days of perfectly matched everything and strict seasonal colour rules … it’s your day .. it should be your way! Have fun with it! There are so many amazingly gorgeous colours out there … a colour perfect for each and everyone of you!
